Sustainable Science Commitment
In February 2025, Memorial University’s Faculty of Science signed the Sustainable Science Commitment, becoming the first institution in Canada to broaden the initiative across all science disciplines rather than limiting it to chemistry. The pledge covers departments including Biochemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Ocean Sciences, Physics and Physical Oceanography, Psychology, as well as the Dean’s Office and the faculty’s supply chain. Spearheaded by PhD students Olivia Wyper and Mikhailey Wheeler, in collaboration with faculty leaders and Beyond Benign, the initiative reflects the determination of student champions to embed sustainability in every aspect of academic life.
The commitment encourages greener lab practices, reduced paper and energy use, sustainable procurement, and stronger connections with industry partners. It also integrates sustainability into teaching and research, equipping students and faculty to drive systemic change within and beyond the university. By joining 17 other Canadian institutions already involved in the Green Chemistry Commitment, Memorial is positioning itself as a national leader in advancing sustainability in science, reinforcing its responsibility to foster innovation that benefits both people and the planet.
