UCT study highlights emerging pollution risks in False Bay
Researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) have identified pharmaceuticals, pesticides and metals in the waters and sediments of False Bay, highlighting the growing impact of urban development, wastewater discharge and harbour activity on coastal ecosystems. While current contamination levels remain below thresholds associated with immediate ecological harm, the study calls for continued monitoring to better understand long-term environmental risks and protect marine biodiversity. The research supports SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by advancing knowledge for sustainable ocean management and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through its focus on water quality and pollution prevention.
