ISC Report on Gender Equality in Scientific Organisations

The International Science Council (ISC) has published a report that assesses gender equality in scientific organisations globally. Departing form a 2025 study in collaboration with the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) and the Standing Committee for Gender Equality in Science (SCGES), the report raises questions about whether women in science can participate on equal terms.

Findings were drawn from survey responses from 136 organisations and close to 600 scientists and 12 interviews with leaders of scientific organisations.

Key findings from the report highlight how women are still underrepresented compared to data from a similar 2015 study. While more than half of the scientific unions included in the study reported having gender equality policies, strategically or institutionally implemented. Moreover, in cases where women are represented and their participation is at a similar level as men's, it rarely leads to recognition or progression into leadership- or decisionmaking-roles.
