Future West African Upwelling System (FUTURO)
Led by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in co-leadership with IOCAFRICA, the FUTURO project is an initiative focused on closing critical knowledge gaps in the West African Upwelling System—a region that plays a central role in global climate regulation and serves as a vital source of marine resources for West African countries and beyond.
FUTURO will launch a major international year-long field campaign in 2028 in the Mauritania–Senegalese upwelling region, bringing together scientists, local experts, and stakeholders from multiple disciplines. The goal is to co-design the campaign in a way that integrates scientific inquiry with community knowledge to ensure the research benefits not only global understanding but also the well-being and livelihoods of local populations.
Beyond data collection, FUTURO aims to build a network of engaged stakeholders, spread awareness about the significance of the upwelling system, and foster lasting dialogue that supports sustainable marine management in the region. By linking cutting-edge research with real-world impact, FUTURO contributes to more informed decision-making and responsible stewardship of ocean resources.
