Kenyatta University (KU) showcased the impact of its collaboration with The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) during a visit by TWAS representatives on 28 October 2025. The forum brought together former grantees, early-career researchers, and postgraduate students to highlight how TWAS funding is strengthening research capacity and reversing brain drain into brain gain.

KU scholars shared success stories of how TWAS grants enabled the acquisition of advanced research equipment, supported postgraduate students, and built sustainable research ecosystems. University leaders emphasized KU’s focus on innovation-driven postgraduate training and the role of international partnerships in covering research costs and connecting scientists to global networks.

Speakers highlighted TWAS mobility and collaboration programmes, particularly the African–German Mobility Programme, which has supported over 120 scientists since 2022 and encouraged the return of skilled researchers to local institutions. Additional examples demonstrated how TWAS funding has led to innovations in nanotechnology, water filtration, drug discovery, and industry-linked research.

Overall, the visit reaffirmed TWAS’s commitment to nurturing Africa’s next generation of scientists and aligned with KU’s vision of becoming a leading center of postgraduate research excellence and innovation in Africa.
