AI Simulations for the Election of the Next UN Secretary-General

As the United Nations prepares to select its next Secretary-General, University College Dublin and TheDiplomat.AI co-organised a unique online event exploring the election through AI-powered diplomatic simulations. At the center of the discussion will be TheDiplomat.AI’s artificial intelligence models representing the five Permanent Members of the UN Security Council (P5). The models are designed to simulate how different countries may approach complex diplomatic and geopolitical decisions.

During the event, panelists will pose questions and scenarios to the P5 AI models and explore issues including:

• Which candidates are most likely to gain or lose support among Security Council members?

• Which candidates may face a veto?

• Where might the interests of the major powers align or diverge?

• What compromises could emerge as the selection process develops?

• How could changes in the geopolitical environment affect the outcome?

The panel will then analyse and challenge the simulation results, discussing where the AI accurately — or inaccurately — captures the interests, priorities and perspectives of the P5. The event will conclude with a live Q&A with the audience, bringing together members of the diplomatic and UN community, academics, NGOs, and others working in international affairs.
