Symposium on Sustainable Building Materials Engineering
The University of the Faroe Islands’ Civil Engineering Department hosted the Symposium on Sustainable Building Materials Engineering in Tórshavn, capital of the Faroe Islands, on 13–14 March 2025, coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Karin Habermehl-Cwirzen. The two-day event brought together experts from academia, industry, and government, both locally and internationally, to explore innovative, eco-friendly solutions in building materials and strategies for CO₂ reduction in construction. Day 1 featured a series of presentations - also live-streamed - culminating in the official opening of the Building Materials Laboratory at the university, marking a milestone in research infrastructure. Day 2 included site visits to local companies and institutions, offering participants insight into how sustainable practices are applied in the Faroese construction sector.
Participation included researchers, engineers, practitioners, civil servants, university students, and high-school students, with many contributing posters. To encourage innovation, a prize was awarded to the best student and high-school posters, recognizing outstanding contributions to the future of sustainable building materials. The symposium not only advanced technical knowledge but also fostered networking and collaboration, strengthening the University’s role as a regional hub for sustainable engineering research and education.
