Sustainability Action Plan (2024 - 2029)
The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) has developed a comprehensive Sustainability Action Plan that outlines the university’s long-term commitment to environmental responsibility, social well-being, and sustainable campus development. The plan presents sustainability as a core institutional priority for AURAK, framing environmental and social responsibility as essential to the university’s mission. It emphasizes that sustainability extends beyond environmental protection to include social well-being, community engagement, education, and equitable development. To guide this work, the university establishes a Sustainability Initiatives Committee and sets out a coordinated, institution-wide approach.
The Action Plan is structured around three main goals:
-
reducing AURAK’s carbon footprint
-
embedding sustainability principles across academics and operations
-
implementing targeted initiatives across energy, buildings, waste, water, travel, and procurement.
It introduces four major programs - addressing clean energy, green buildings, operational efficiency, and leadership through education and culture. Key targets include achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, reducing emissions by 20% by 2030, expanding renewable energy systems, retrofitting buildings to green standards, improving waste and water management, encouraging sustainable transportation, enhancing green spaces, and adopting responsible procurement policies.
Beyond infrastructure, the plan stresses integrating sustainability into curricula, research, student activities, and community partnerships. It aims to cultivate a campus culture in which sustainability is part of daily practice and long-term institutional identity. Overall, the plan positions AURAK to significantly reduce its environmental impact while shaping students and staff to contribute to a more sustainable and socially responsible future.
