Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences Adopts University-Wide Sustainability Strategy
On 29 July 2025, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences launched its first comprehensive sustainability strategy, providing a framework for long-term, structured, and participatory development across all university levels. Embedded within the university’s overall strategy, it articulates the university's commitment to integrating sustainability systematically into its operations, teaching, research, and governance.
The strategy follows a Whole Institution Approach (WIA) and is organized into four key development areas: Governance, Teaching & Learning, Research & Transfer, and Operations, with twelve strategic goals guiding future initiatives. Its vision is to make sustainability a natural part of daily university life while driving local, national, and international societal transformation through innovative solutions.
Developed through a university-wide participatory process starting in 2023, the strategy engaged over 50 participants from faculties, research centers, administration, and student bodies. The resulting roadmap sets objectives for 2025–2030, supported by an accompanying action program and indicators for monitoring progress.
Implementation will be coordinated by the newly established Competence Center for Sustainable Development, which will also oversee reporting and monitoring. The strategy will be showcased on 22 October during the launch of the physical Green Office, offering all university members the opportunity to engage with its goals and participate in shaping the university’s sustainability journey.
