About
The University of Zagreb founded in 1669, is Croatia’s largest and oldest university, committed to scientific, artistic, and sustainable development in service of society. Its mission emphasizes research-based teaching, creativity, human rights, and contributions to regional and national progress. With around 72,480 students and about 7,900 academic staff, it offers a broad range of programmes across 29 faculties, 3 art academies and a university centre, spanning arts, biomedicine, engineering, social sciences, natural sciences, humanities, and more. The university is strong in interdisciplinary and translational research—particularly in areas such as sustainability, innovation, digitalization, energy & environment (e.g. via the SDEWES Centre), and basic sciences. Its campus development (such as the new Borongaj campus), modern facilities, robust e-learning infrastructure (e.g. SRCE/Merlin), and extensive international partnerships (via Erasmus+, bilateral agreements, and collaborative research projects) further strengthen its global reach and impact.
Sustainability at University of Zagreb
The University of Zagreb is deeply committed to sustainability, embedding it holistically across research, teaching, campus life, and community engagement. It promotes a culture in which students and staff explore sustainability in interdisciplinary curricula, contribute to knowledge through responsible and forward-looking research, and bring sustainable practices into daily campus operations. The institution fosters community partnerships to address local and global challenges, aligning its goals with the UN SDGs by nurturing equity, resilience, climate action, and sustainable resource use. In 2021, UNIPU was ranked 569 in the international ranking of sustainable universities (UI GreenMetric). They ranked as the first Croatian university.
