About

The University of Costa Rica is made up of a community of professors, students and administrators, all dedicated to teaching, research and social action. The University of Costa Rica's efforts are aimed at promoting the advancement of knowledge and responding effectively to the needs generated by the integral development of society, offering excellence in the training of professionals who, in turn, act as agents of change.

Universidad de Costa Rica, as a public higher education institution contributes to the transformations that society needs to achieve the common good, through a policy aimed at achieving social justice, equity, integral development, full freedom, and total independence of our people (article 3 of UCR’s Organic Statute). Due to the above, it adds to the call of the United Nations Organization (UN) in compliance with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Sustainability at UCR

In September 2016, Costa Rica became the first country to sign a National Pact for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which implies a great responsibility. Likewise, the National Council of Rectors (CONARE) was the first to join this great challenge.
Currently, Universidad de Costa Rica develops a large number of programs, projects and activities which contribute to the SDGs. Read more here.

The Center for Research and Studies for Sustainable Development (CIEDES) is a multidisciplinary unit dedicated to research and study of the structure, processes and results of the interaction between societies and the environment, with the purpose of determine fair mechanisms that allow the integral development of the human being, promoting at the same time the recovery or conservation of ecosystems and natural geosystems, under a perspective of long-term coexistence. The general objective of CIEDES is to promote and develop interdisciplinary research and studies on socioeconomic and technological development processes and their interactions with the natural environment in order to search for feasible solutions to meet the needs of present generations without compromising the possibilities of future generations. to meet your own needs

The center aims to be the benchmark in terms of the promotion and dissemination of the culture of sustainable development to have a national and international impact as an agent of change in socioeconomic and technological development for the efficient, effective and sustainable use of resources and to be a research center that promotes multi and interdisciplinary work in an attempt to find viable solutions to harmonize social, economic and industrial development with natural systems and guarantee the well-being of future generations.
