City-University Partnerships for Climate Action

Between 2025 and 2029, University College Cork is working with a research project called ''The Urban Climate Collab'' that explores how cities and universities can collaborate more effectively to tackle climate change. Grounded in Transdisciplinary Research, the project investigates how these partnerships can move beyond theory to deliver tangible urban climate action.

The core aim of the project is to identify practical mechanisms, governance models, and knowledge-sharing practices that strengthen cooperation between academic institutions and municipal actors. By doing so, the project contributes to accelerating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action, sustainable cities, and partnerships, by translating research into actionable policy and implementation strategies.

Current research initiatives include a qualitative online survey designed to build on findings from a literature review on city–university partnerships for climate action. The survey gathers insights from both city and academic representatives involved in joint projects, aiming to identify best practices and effective support structures. Results will inform recommendations shared locally with Cork City Council and internationally through the UNIC network, supporting collaborative workshops and strengthening future climate partnerships.
