University of Zakho

The University of Zakho (UoZ), dating back to 2005 and located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, is committed to becoming a leading institution for sustainable transformation in the region by integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into education, research, innovation, institutional development, and community engagement. UoZ seeks to strengthen the role of higher education in addressing local and global challenges, with a particular focus on building resilient communities, protecting the environment, promoting inclusive development, and contributing to a transition towards a low-carbon and more sustainable future.

To advance this vision, the University has established the Zakho Center for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG Center) as a dedicated institutional platform for coordinating, promoting, and accelerating SDG-related activities across the University and beyond. The Center brings together students, academics, researchers, university units, public institutions, private-sector actors, and community partners to translate the SDGs from global commitments into practical local action.

The Center's work aims to foster interdisciplinary research, sustainability education, student-led initiatives, environmental action, innovation, community engagement, and partnerships for sustainable development. Particular attention is given to strengthening awareness and action on climate change, resource efficiency, sustainable communities, responsible practices, and pathways towards lower-carbon development.

Through this institutional commitment, UoZ aims to serve as a catalyst for sustainable transformation in the Kurdistan Region and contribute to international higher education networks advancing the SDGs.
