Department of Environmental Sciences
The University of Zakho established the Department of Environmental Sciences in 2011, offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programs in Environmental Sciences. The department focuses on understanding ecological systems and human impacts on the environment, with a mission to balance human needs with the preservation of a healthy biosphere. By studying ecological change, population dynamics, pollution, and resource use, and through a strong scientific curriculum and research opportunities, the department equips students with expertise in environmental monitoring, assessment, policy, and sustainable practices to address current and future environmental challenges.
The department actively engages in environmental awareness initiatives. It organized activities on Kurdistan Environment Day and conducted events both within the university campus and on broader university grounds, promoting sustainability awareness and environmental education among students, faculty, and the local community.
