Its mission is to cultivate innovative, analytical, articulate graduates while advancing international scholarship and regional development; its vision is to be a respected global university affirming its African identity. Its research strengths include nanotechnology, biotechnology, water and aquatic systems, critical sexualities, sustainable livelihoods, and marine ecosystems. The single campus, set on 203 ha with historic architecture, landscaped grounds, residences, modern library and labs, fosters close student–faculty interaction. Rhodes maintains global linkages through partnerships with universities in the UK, Sweden, China, the USA, and multilateral organisations (e.g. WHO, Gates Foundation) to support collaborative research, exchange and community-engagement initiatives.

Sustainability at Rhodes University

Rhodes University embeds sustainability deeply into its identity, advancing it across research, curriculum, campus life and community outreach in alignment with the UN SDGs. Through teaching and learning, faculties integrate environmental, social and economic justice themes; in research, interdisciplinary inquiry seeks solutions for resilient ecosystems, climate action, equitable development and biodiversity. The campus is managed with resource-wise practices (water, energy, waste) and sustainability is part of institutional decision-making.
