About
Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS), established in 1967 and granted deemed-university status in 1988, is a distinctive institution in Sarnath (Varanasi), India, dedicated to preserving and advancing Tibetan culture, Buddhist philosophy, and Himalayan studies. Guided by values of scholarship, intercultural dialogue, and ethical responsibility, CUTS serves around 450 students supported by over 150 staff. It offers programmes from pre-university to doctoral levels across Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan language and literature, Sowa-Rigpa (traditional Tibetan medicine), fine arts, astrology, and Himalayan culture. The university’s research focuses on Indo-Tibetan studies, manuscript restoration, cultural preservation, and traditional knowledge systems, supported by a serene, fully residential campus that fosters learning and global collaboration.
