Beijing Normal University (BNU) is one of China’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning. Originating from the Education Department of the Imperial University of Peking in 1902, BNU pioneered teacher training in China and has since evolved into a comprehensive, research-intensive university. Its academic strengths span the sciences and humanities, with a distinguished focus on teacher education and educational science.

The university operates across two campuses—Beijing and Zhuhai—and comprises 3 faculties, 27 schools, 2 departments, 11 research institutes, and 4 academies. With more than 35,000 full-time students and over 8,000 faculty members, including a high proportion of PhD holders, BNU maintains a strong academic and research environment. Its library resources include more than 5.4 million print volumes and 8.2 million electronic books.

BNU has built a robust international network, engaging in partnerships with around 300 universities and organizations from over 40 countries and regions. Each year, the university hosts more than 900 international scholars and professors, and welcomes approximately 2,000 long-term international students, placing it among the top Chinese universities for global student engagement.

The university is also home to the China Sustainability Hub, founded in 2016 and hosted by the School of Social Development and Public Policy (SSDPP). The Hub conducts interdisciplinary research and collaborates with ministries, academic institutions, and think tanks across China to promote sustainable development.

BNU’s broader institutional affiliations extend into finance and sustainability. The university is part of the CGD Group, a 143-year-old Portuguese state-owned financial conglomerate with global operations. Based in Macao, BNU aligns with both European and Chinese sustainability frameworks, adhering to environmental regulations from entities such as the European Central Bank and the European Banking Authority, while also implementing internal policies focused on reducing carbon emissions across its stakeholder network.
