Weave Project on Involuntary Immobility and Development
UNU-CRIS’s Weave Project on Involuntary Immobility and Development is an active joint PhD research project, developed in collaboration with Ghent University, that started in 2023 and is expected to end in 2027. The project examines the development consequences of involuntary immobility, focusing on people who want to migrate but are unable to do so because of limited resources, opportunities, or structural conditions. It focuses on young people in southern Senegal, especially Ziguinchor, Kolda, and surrounding villages, where many people have high migration aspirations but limited migration capabilities. By studying the causes and socio-economic consequences of involuntary immobility, the project expands how migration inequality is understood, showing that inequality is not only about who is able to move, but also about who is prevented from moving.
