Study Programmes Courses on Sustainable Development at the University of Costa Rica 2026
The University of Costa Rica (UCR) integrates sustainable development into its academic programmes, research and engagement with productive sectors. The Atlantic Campus offers a Bachelor's Degree in Sustainable Development Engineering, covering topics such as sustainable development, strategic sustainability management, environmental law, environmental pollution, land-use planning, project management, environmental management, wastewater treatment, ecotourism and sustainable value chains. The curriculum also includes the assessment of the life cycle sustainability of bio-based value chains and the design of public-private partnerships for sustainable development.
Practical collaboration and knowledge transfer are key elements of UCR's sustainability work. The university has implemented projects directly with companies on sustainable supply chains, sustainable procurement, corporate sustainability, social responsibility, management systems and waste biodegradation. It also collaborates with productive sectors on sustainable dairy farming, waste management in industrial production and sustainable business models. Further activities address sustainability standards and frameworks, including ISO, ESG, social responsibility and the circular economy.
At postgraduate level, UCR offers a Postgraduate Programme in Sustainable Development, with two specialisations: Conservation of Biological Resources and Environmental Education and Promotion.
The university also has an Environmental Management Unit, which works on institutional sustainability initiatives, including collaboration with the Vice-Rectorate for Teaching to develop an environmental management module for teaching staff.
