Open call for Mediterranean universities to endorse the Girona Manifesto

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and UNIMED – Mediterranean Universities Union have launched an open call for universities across the Euro-Mediterranean region to endorse the Girona Manifesto, a new joint initiative for climate action.

Set to be officially presented at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, the Euromed University Initiative for Climate Action highlights the urgent need for academic leadership in response to the climate crisis, as the Mediterranean region warms 20% faster than the global average.

By endorsing the Manifesto, institutions commit to:

  • Advancing climate education and integrating sustainability across curricula
  • Empowering students to take part in climate governance
  • Supporting green innovation through living labs and sustainable campuses
  • Strengthening regional collaboration on climate action

Universities, research centers, academic networks, NGOs, and international organizations working in higher education and sustainability are encouraged to join.

How to endorse:
Submit an official letter of support from your institution’s leadership (Rector, President, or equivalent) using the endorsement template.
