EAUC Air Travel Justification Tool

On May 20, 2026, the EAUC (Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges) released a digital decision-making tool to help academics assess whether it is environmentally sound to fly to and from conferences and other overseas events. Through a 5-part assessment consisting of self-report questions, the tool combines personal beliefs, networking, presentation, learning, and other aspects to weigh the environmental impact with the social and individual benefits from attending the conference or event. By providing this academic support, the EAUC tool contributes to sustainability consciousness and the advancement of SDG13.

Should any institution be interested in tailoring the tool to their own context, the EAUC is happy to share the code.

Note: The EAUC originally published this resource in March 2020 with support from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Strathclyde.
