World Environment Day at UniFiji

On June 5, 2025, the University of Fiji (UniFiji) joined the global community in celebrating World Environment Day, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability under this year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution.” Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem emphasized the Pacific’s environmental vulnerability, stressing that plastic waste is degrading land and marine ecosystems, threatening biodiversity, and undermining food security. She called on students and staff to critically reflect on their plastic consumption and avoid single-use plastics where possible.
As part of its Strategic Plan (2022–2026), UniFiji has launched several initiatives to advance environmental responsibility. These include the creation of the Ecological and Climate Crises Legal Institute (ECCLI), an interdisciplinary body combining science and law to strengthen environmental advocacy and prepare future Pacific leaders, as well as a partnership with the Pacific Recycling Foundation to support waste collection and recycling on its Saweni and Samabula campuses. The University is also exploring long-term strategies to reduce or eliminate plastic use on campus, fostering a culture of sustainability among staff and students.
At the international level, Professor Shameem reaffirmed UniFiji’s support for the proposed UN Global Plastic Pollution Treaty, which seeks to tackle the issue through coordinated global action. By aligning local actions with global sustainability goals, the University of Fiji demonstrates its role as a socially responsible higher education institution committed to environmental protection, community well-being, and a sustainable future for the Pacific.
