University of Valencia project awarded 2026 LIFE Award for Climate Action

The LIFE Wetlands4Climate project, scientifically led by the University of Valencia under the coordination of Professor Antonio Camacho, has received the 2026 LIFE Award for Climate Action, the European Union’s highest distinction for environmental and climate initiatives.

Announced in June 2026, the award recognizes the project's work across Mediterranean wetlands in Spain, demonstrating how wetland restoration and sustainable management can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while preserving biodiversity. Through research, field-based experimentation, and collaboration with public and private stakeholders, the project developed innovative methods to enhance wetlands' role as natural carbon sinks and climate solutions. Its findings are already informing climate policies at national and international levels, and the project contributes directly to SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
