UNEP-DHI Centre on Water and Environment

The UNEP-DHI Centre on Water and Environment, established in 1996, is a UNEP centre of expertise dedicated to advancing the sustainable management, development, and use of freshwater resources globally. Co-funded by UNEP, Danida, and DHI since 2001, the Centre has become a core contributor to UNEP’s freshwater strategies and a key player in supporting water-related SDGs. Hosted by DHI - a Denmark-based, non-profit international research and advisory organization with over 50 years of experience and operations in more than 25 countries - the Centre leverages DHI’s technical expertise, innovation, and global network to promote integrated water resources management through collaborative projects and partnerships worldwide.
Relevance for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
HEIs can draw on the UNEP-DHI Centre’s knowledge, tools, and data to strengthen research, teaching, and innovation in water sustainability. Universities can use its open-access resources, modeling systems, and case studies to train future water professionals, integrate real-world data into curricula, and conduct applied research on freshwater management and climate resilience. Collaboration with UNEP-DHI can also enhance interdisciplinary education, connect students and researchers to global water networks, and support community-based projects that translate science into practical, policy-relevant solutions for sustainable water governance.
