Sub-Saharan Africa Teacher Leadership for Education for Sustainable Development

The Sub-Saharan Africa Teacher Leadership for Education for Sustainable Development (SSATL-ESD) project aims to strengthen teacher leadership in embedding Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across teacher education and schools in Sub-Saharan Africa. Coordinated by Leuphana University (Germany) with partners in South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Malawi, Kenya, Cyprus, and Greece, the initiative builds on the Sustainability Starts with Teachers programme. Through blended professional learning, curriculum innovation, and a networked community of practice, SSATL-ESD empowers teacher leaders, enhances institutional capacity, and supports policy dialogue to mainstream ESD in education systems and advance the SDGs across the region.
More info on the project can be accessed here.
The SSATL-ESD Launch Workshop will be held on 15 October 2025 (9:00–12:00 SAST), marking the start of the new project which supports teacher educators and TVET trainers in integrating ESD into teaching, leadership, and institutional practices, featuring a keynote by Prof. Heila Lotz-Sisitka. Participants explore collaboration opportunities, shared experiences, and help shape the project's next steps - strengthening teacher leadership, resource exchange, and professional growth through research and innovation.
