Research project strengthens ESD teacher training in Africa

In May 2026, Leuphana University announced a cross-border research project to strengthen teacher training in Sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative, involving 15 African and European institutions, aims to improve education for sustainable development (ESD) by equipping teachers with leadership, digital learning, and innovative teaching skills. The project addresses growing teacher shortages and the need for better-quality training as Africa’s youth population rapidly expands. Through “ESD Change Projects,” educators and students will work together to promote curriculum innovation and transformative learning.

The project also encourages collaboration between universities, schools, and local communities to create long-term educational improvements. By integrating sustainability principles into teacher education, it prepares future educators to address social, environmental, and economic challenges. This approach promotes inclusive, resilient, and innovative learning systems across participating African countries.Co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme, the initiative supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
