Impact

IMP>ACT is a European project (2024–2027) that aims to understand and measure what learners truly gain from Sustainability and Climate Change Education (SCCE) - especially how it shapes their mindsets, skills, and real-world actions.

Because SCCE is still relatively new in the EU, there is limited evidence on what effective SCCE looks like and how its impact can be assessed. IMP>ACT addresses this gap by developing a user-centred, evidence-based assessment framework that helps policymakers, educators, and researchers evaluate and improve SCCE policies, curricula, and practices.

At the core of the framework are:

  • Action competence: learners’ commitment, willingness, and ability to take intentional, informed action on sustainability issues.

  • Action-oriented education: teaching approaches that actively foster this competence.

The project brings together an interdisciplinary consortium of academic and societal partners across Europe, supported by national stakeholder groups (35+ organisations). Using a participatory design approach, stakeholders co-develop, test, and validate the framework through small-scale interventions and six large-scale case studies covering lifelong learning contexts.

Overall, IMP>ACT strengthens feedback loops between research, policy, and practice, builds a robust evidence base for SCCE, and supports long-term quality improvement in sustainability education across Europe.
