Green Initiative Sustainability@Grenfell
In 2025, Grenfell Campus launched new green initiatives through a waste innovation working group of faculty, staff, and students. With support from local partners and student leaders, the campus introduced Sustainability@Grenfell, a student sustainability club. Looking ahead, priorities for 2025–26 include expanding student and community engagement, composting, and improved recycling opportunities. Grenfell Campus is one of four campuses of Memorial University of Newfoundland, with a focus on environmental studies and the visual and performing arts.
Some key initiatives are:
-
Sustainability@Grenfell club – a new student-led group dedicated to promoting sustainability awareness and activities on campus.
-
“Swap Shelf” pilot – launched during Fall Orientation 2025 with the GCSU, providing a space for students to exchange second-hand items and reduce waste.
-
Community composters – re-introduced in partnership with the Western Environment Centre to divert organic waste from landfill.
-
Bin-Free Space initiative – led by Custodial Services, encouraging faculty and staff to remove personal garbage/recycling bins and instead use centralized sorting stations.
-
Enhanced signage – installed across residences and campus buildings to guide proper recycling, composting, and waste sorting practices.
-
New sorting stations – planned for roll-out across campus to improve waste segregation and recycling efficiency.
-
Creative reuse – shredded paper from campus provided to a local artist for papermaking, including Grenfell’s Horseshoe Press.
-
Call2Recycle partnership – applied to become a community partner for national battery and cellphone recycling.
