Bergen Summer Research School 2026

The Bergen Summer Research School (BSRS) brings together around 100 PhD students and researchers from around the world each summer to work on global challenges. The 2026 edition, held 1–11 June at the University of Bergen, Norway, focuses on “Ocean Expectations.” Participants receive intensive training from international experts, build global networks, learn interdisciplinary methods, and develop policy briefs.

The 2026 theme addresses the ocean’s role in climate change, food security, energy transitions, and cultural engagement. Through lectures, workshops, and collaboration with peers, participants will explore innovative approaches to ocean-related research and contribute to sustainable and equitable ocean futures.

The programme offers five parallel courses:

  • Accounting for sustainability: water and climate
  • Ocean productivity and seafood in a changing climate
  • The ocean and planetary health justice
  • Ocean desires, ocean diversities
  • Diverse ways of sensing, knowing, and valuing the ocean

Participants also complete two mandatory courses:

  • Systems thinking and creative problem-solving
  • Good practices for authorship and publishing in the AI age (TBA)

Applications are open until 1 February 2026.
