Concordia University, founded in 1974, is a dynamic English-language research university in Montreal committed to innovation, diversity, and community engagement. Its mission emphasizes excellence in education, research, creative activity, and partnerships, and it aspires to be among Canada’s leading comprehensive universities. With nearly 50,000 students and over 4,400 faculty and librarians (plus over 2,200 administrative staff), Concordia offers programs across faculties of Arts & Science, Fine Arts, Engineering & Computer Science, and Business, along with graduate and continuing education. Its research strengths include sustainability and environment, digital media and creative arts, health and life sciences, data science and AI, and urban innovation. The university’s campuses feature modern labs, studios, residences, libraries, and athletics facilities (e.g. the 4,000-seat Concordia Stadium) and it maintains global research and exchange partnerships to support collaborative and impactful scholarship.

Sustainability at Concordia University

Since publishing their first Sustainability Policy in 2016, Concordia University has expanded their strategy, actions, and reach in achieving sustainability both on campus and in the wider community of Montreal. Concordia University has five stream plans for 2020-2025 that reflects their multifacted vision for achieving sustainability. The University has also launched a Voluntary University Review (VUR) in 2021, modeled after countries and cities who self-assess their progress towards achieving the SDGs and following trailblazer universities who started VURs. Concordia also partakes in a wide variety of sustainability assessments.

 The University uses a diverse range of strategies to ensure the success of sustainability initiatives undertaken by its community. These initiatives involve the university community on various topics such as waste, food, energy, transportation, buildings...
