GOSDi – Global Ocean Science Diplomacy innovator launched
World Ocean Day! Building a Global Community for Ocean Science Diplomacy ⚓️
On World Ocean Day 2026, the founding partners of the Global Ocean Science Diplomacy innovator (GOSDi)—including the University of Bergen (UiB), Brazil’s Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Oceânicas (INPO), and collaborating institutions and networks are pleased to announce the launch of this new initiative.
GOSDi builds on several years of dialogue and collaboration around Ocean Science Diplomacy (OSD), an emerging field that connects science, policy, diplomacy, innovation, and society to address complex ocean challenges. As climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, critical resources, and international security become increasingly interconnected through the ocean, stronger cooperation and more equitable knowledge partnerships are needed than ever before.
The initiative also builds on the momentum of the official side event Navigating Common Waters: Ocean Science Diplomacy for a Sustainable Common Future, held during the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice in June 2025 and supported by the IAU.
One year on, GOSDi is being launched as an open and collaborative platform dedicated to advancing dialogue, knowledge exchange, and innovation in Ocean Science Diplomacy.
The founding partners welcome connections with individuals and organizations interested in contributing to this growing global conversation.
