ESU's Statement on Sustainability of Higher Education
In response to the ongoing triple planetary crisis—climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss—the European Students’ Union (ESU) has released a statement emphasizing the vital role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in creating systemic, knowledge-driven solutions.
The statement calls on HEIs to take a whole-institution approach to sustainability, integrating sustainable practices across education, research, operations, social engagement, and leadership. It underscores the responsibility of HEIs not only to equip students with the competencies to address global challenges, but also to model sustainability in their own practices and contribute to informed societal dialogue.
While the ESU has a separate position on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), this statement focuses on broader institutional transformation. With coordinated and evidence-based action, ESU believes higher education can play a pivotal role in shaping a viable, sustainable future.
