UNESCO has just launched a new international project, “Gender-Inclusive Science Institutions & Systems (GenSIS): Strengthening the Leadership of Women in Research & Higher Education”, supported by IDRC and developed under the UNESCO Call to Action "Closing the Gender Gap in Science".

Over the coming years, the UNESCO Gender Equality in Science team and OWSD will work together to advance gender inclusion in science institutions and systems worldwide. GenSIS will generate new evidence, identify effective solutions, and elevate good practices that strengthen women’s leadership in higher education and Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) institutions.

Bringing together a wide range of STI-related actors (including women scientists from UNESCO-OWSD networks, universities, research centres, ministries and science granting councils), GenSIS will engage participants in:

  • contributing to new data and evidence,
  • identifying priority policy reforms,
  • supporting institutional capacity-building, and
  • exchanging knowledge and experiences between women scientists and policymakers.
