UCD Students Launch Open-Source Tool to Track Digital Carbon Footprints

How can we measure the environmental impact of our digital lives?

As part of the Spark Project for Deloitte Ireland, MSc students from the Design Thinking for Sustainability programme at the Innovation Academy, University College Dublin (UCD) developed DigiFoot—a digital carbon footprint calculator.

Initially created to help Deloitte assess its digital impact, the tool evolved during development. Recognising its broader potential, the team made DigiFoot open source, enabling wider use by organisations and individuals aiming to reduce their digital carbon footprint.

By transforming a focused challenge into a publicly available solution, these students demonstrate how higher education can drive innovation for sustainability in the digital age.
