Strengthening SDG 11 through Municipal Partnerships
Tokai University has built a broad network of local collaborations, forming partnership agreements with 32 municipalities across Japan. In 2024, the School of Humanities and Culture expanded this network by signing cooperation agreements with Matsuda Town in Kanagawa Prefecture and Kuriyama Town in Hokkaido. These partnerships aim to support practical, community-engaged education that develops future leaders committed to sustainable local development. Through the shared use of human and intellectual resources and interdisciplinary cooperation, the university and its partner municipalities work together to strengthen community vitality and long-term sustainability.
This initiative contributes directly to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by strengthening collaboration between Tokai University and local municipalities to support long-term community wellbeing. Through formal partnership agreements, the university works with towns across Japan to address real local challenges, co-develop solutions, and build the capacity of communities to thrive sustainably. The focus on practical, community-embedded education enables students to engage in projects related to local revitalization, disaster preparedness, cultural preservation, and social inclusion-all key elements of SDG 11. By sharing human and intellectual resources, the partnerships promote more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable local systems, while simultaneously cultivating future leaders equipped to support sustainable urban and regional development.
