IAU Horizons: Call for Papers on Leadership for a Sustainable Future – Higher Education and Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals
The In Focus section of the upcoming IAU Horizons Vol. 26, No. 2, Autumn 2021 will be dedicated to the topic Leadership for a Sustainable Future – Higher Education and Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals. Drawing on the vast experience and expertise of Members of the IAU network, featured papers will demonstrate the crucial role of academic leadership in mainstreaming sustainable development.
2021 is a critical year for higher education and Agenda 2030, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Indeed, we are ten years away from the deadline set for Agenda 2030 and much remains to be done. With the world facing various crises bringing a multitude of challenges and opportunities, universities have a leading role to play in this global endeavour to implement the SDGs. Through education, research, campus initiatives, community engagement activities and campaigns at a local, national, regional, and global level, universities are the key to healthier, greener, fairer, and more inclusive societies.
The decade of action which started this year calls for strong partnerships towards achieving the Goals. Effective engagement among higher education leadership and constructive cooperation rather than competition among universities and other HEIs as well as with HE stakeholders and partners will contribute towards paving a sustainable way forward.
We therefore call upon higher education leaders to share their ideas and opinions on the subject. Interested authors are invited to share their leadership initiatives, strategic practices for SD and the impact on their institutions, with a focus on whole institution approaches to SD, leadership dynamics within the institution including academic and administrative staff, researchers, project leaders, as well as student leaders, since both bottom-up and top-down processes will help inspire readers to connect and get involved more actively.
