Students presented wish list for sustainability at the universities

On November 13th, a monthly meeting of Gothenburg Students for Sustainability Alliance (GSSA) took place at the GMV. Among the present were the director of GMV Jan Pettersson, the vice-chancellor of Chalmers Stefan Bengtsson, and over 30 students representing the total of 13 student sustainability groups.

After briefly sharing the updates within each group, participants engaged in an active discussion of the primary item of the meeting’s agenda: a wish list that the students had previously prepared for further consideration by the vice-chancellors of the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers.

The three main sections addressed on the list were improving education for sustainability, promoting a sustainable university, and supporting student sustainability groups. Some specific suggestions from the students included integrating sustainability into every course in a way that is relevant to the students’ main area of study; introducing a sustainability mentoring program that could benefit not only the students but also the teachers; serving more vegetarian meals and banning single-use items at the university cafeterias; making better use of video conferencing in order to replace air travel where possible, and much more.
