Students bring sustainability to Swiss universities

In March 2018, the Swiss Sustainability Week (SSW) will take place for the first time at more than 20 universities in 12 cities across Switzerland. The SSW is a series of events dealing with environmental, social and economic sustainability. Over 100 events have been organised by more than 300 student volunteers. The entire program is free and open to the public.

Students voluntarily organise a wide range of events relating to sustainability, not just environmentally, but also socially and economically. The organising team consists of more than 300 students from over 20 Swiss universities. The program aims to highlight various aspects of sustainability and their complexity, to deepen and widen our knowledge and to enable visitors to meet experts. The goal is to inspire, educate and engage students, academics and the general public. Visitors can look forward to lectures, poetry slams, flea markets, cooking shows, workshops, excursions and more. In addition to organising events, the students involved also actively engage with their university administrations, encouraging them to act more sustainably and to serve as role models for the wider community.
The concept of the SSW is based on that of the Zurich Sustainability Week, which started at the ETH and University of Zurich in 2013. In the past five years it has reached over 15,000 visitors. March 2018 will be the first time that a nationwide Sustainability Week will be held in Switzerland. The project was initiated in 2017 by the Sustainability Week Zurich (NHW), the Sustainability Week Geneva (EDD) and the Swiss Association of Student Organizations for Sustainability (VSN / FDD / FSS). The Swiss Sustainability Week receives financial support from U-Change, Stiftung Mercator Schweiz and the participating universities.
The organising team encourages you to attend your local week to see, experience and engage in discussion about how a more sustainable future can be shaped together. The first Swiss Sustainability Week will be opened by the renowned environmental economist Niko Paech at the University of Zurich on February 26th. In addition, former US Vice President and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore will address the visitors of the opening event in a personal video message.
