University of Rwanda Kicks Off "Legacy Tree Project"
The Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management (CoEB) at the University of Rwanda (UR), in collaboration with the Rwanda Forestry Authority (FRA), has launched an innovative community-based initiative: the "Legacy Tree Project."
This project, launched in April 2025, focuses on identifying, mapping, and protecting old, large native "heritage" trees found in farmlands and villages across Rwanda, outside of national parks and protected areas. These remarkable trees serve as vital seed banks for native species and often hold significant cultural importance within their communities.
By crowdsourcing data on trees with a diameter of at least 50 cm, the Legacy Tree Project aims to raise public awareness about the importance of these natural treasures. The initiative actively engages local authorities, youth, and cooperatives in conservation efforts. Participants are encouraged to identify and record these special trees within their districts.
The project also seeks to utilize these legacy trees for ecosystem restoration efforts, recognizing their value as sources of native seeds and their potential to promote traditional ecological knowledge and people's connection to nature. Incentives and awards will be provided to recognize the valuable contributions of participants in this crucial biodiversity conservation endeavor.
