Project rescuing USAID Education Data
Since the announcement of USAID’s closure, AFLEARN has been working with partners to preserve vital education data and teaching and learning resources. In cooperation with the University of Cape Town, ICPSR at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research's DataLumos is hosting the datasets, following a hackathon organized by Data Rescue Project with the help of volunteers in August 2025.
The project has rescued over 2,500 files from 109 education projects across 43 countries—representing more than 20 years of evidence.
The first rescued datasets are now available on DataLumos, a crowdsourced repository at the ICPSR for at-risk U.S. federal government data.
Explore the interactive map to see which African datasets are already available (with direct links to DataLumos) and which will be released soon.
- The anonymized, de-identified, documented data at the Data Lumos site (setup a free account first, then search by country or by agency, USAID) can be found here.
- The data is also accessible via this data map from the DataFirst team here.
