New Geographic Research Center at the University of Costa Rica

The University of Costa Rica (UCR) has approved the creation of a new Geographic Research Centre (CIGeo) to study the country’s territory and generate scientific information and tools to support territorial planning, disaster-risk management, and climate-change adaptation.

The centre will bring together expertise in data analysis, machine learning, remote sensing, and Earth observation. Its research will address issues such as flood vulnerability, urban growth, changes in forests and coastal areas, and safer decisions about where and how to build.

CIGeo aims to translate scientific data into accessible information that can be used by local governments, communities, farmers, and other stakeholders. It will also strengthen interdisciplinary research and international scientific cooperation.

The centre builds on 29 years of academic and scientific experience within UCR’s School of Geography. Adolfo Quesada Román has been appointed as its first director for a one-year term, bringing experience in research, risk management, and geosciences.
