The University of Freiburg launched a call for ideas on waste reduction. Students could submit their ideas answering two questions asked by the University : The first one was "How to reduce waste at my student dorm?" and the second one was "How to reduce waste at my university?". A total of 20 great ideas were submitted to the call for ideas on the topic of waste prevention at the university and in the student dormitories, with a large proportion of the ideas related to the student dormitories.
The winners for the first topic submitted the idea of turning organic waste from the dormitories into rich soil with a worm box. Their idea came from the fact that there were only residual waste bins and no compost in most dormitories, which is not an environmentally sound waste use. The winner for the second topic had the idea of replacing hygiene products such as hand drying towels, toilet paper and napkins at the cafeteria of the University with 100% recyclable material. The student denounces the fact that these items do not consist of 100% recycled paper, and warns about the environmental consequences of such practices. He then calls for the University to make a change and act as a role model.
