Sustainable Development Goals

The Centre for Peace and Development Studies (CPDS) was established in 1997 as an academic entity within the University of Juba. And in December 2017 the Centre was upgraded by a statue to the Institute for Peace, Development, and Security Studies (IPDSS). The increased incidents and eruption of conflict and civil wars in the former Sudan, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region necessitated the creation of the Centre to promote peace by enhancing scientific inquiry into areas of conflict, peace and development. The Centre serves as a forum for interdisciplinary study, research, teaching and training and public dialogue on conflict, peace and development issues related to South Sudan, the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes Region, the African continent and the world.

Strategic Goals:

• To train graduates and professionals pursuing careers in government institutions, private sector, NGOs, and regional and international organizations and other prospective students interested in the fields of conflict, peace and development.
• To provide a better understanding and promote peace and development through research, teaching and training students to apply research tools to situations of conflict and underdevelopment, particularly in South Sudan, the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region and the African continent.
• To raise awareness about peace and development through public dialogue, public debate, symposia, workshops, seminars and conferences.
• To provide consultancy services in areas of conflict, peace and development and other areas of its competence.

Accomplishments:

The Center offered the following academic programs and courses:

Postgraduate Diplomas in:

(1) Peace and Development Studies,

(2) Humanitarian and Conflict Studies,

(3) Diplomatic Studies

(4) Security and Strategic Studies.

Masters Degrees in:

(1) Peace and Development Studies

(2) Humanitarian and Conflict Studies,

(3) Diplomatic Studies

(4) Security and Strategic Studies.

Doctoral degrees in

(1) Peace and Development Studies

• Short Courses: The Centre organized short courses of one to two weeks in peace and development studies, conflict and humanitarian studies, diplomatic studies and strategic studies. The participants of these short courses were awarded attendance certificates.
• Research: The Centre supervised dissertations undertaken by students of postgraduate diploma, master’s degree and Doctor of Philosophy.
• Conferences and public lectures: The Center conducted a series of conferences and public lectures
• Publications: The Centre is preparing to re-launch its refereed journal called “The Journal of Peace and Development Research (JPDR)”.
• Consultancies: Academic staff were involved in several consultancies individually or under the auspices of the Center
• The Center has a number of projects funded by foreign donors, including NORAD and USAID.
