Centre for Visioning Sustainable Societies
Sustainable Development Goals
Cardiff School of Management has a number of staff who are involved in teaching and researching areas relating to sustainable development and business ethics. These issues are central to the curriculum of many of the postgraduate and undergraduate courses taught within the School.
The School is home to good practice in the teaching of such issues as evidenced by the use of the undergraduate tourism degree as an example in Cardiff Met's response to the Welsh Assembly Government's Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship consultation.
However, to date, the School has no formal mechanism for bringing together staff with interests in teaching and researching areas relating to sustainable development. Therefore, in order to build on current interest and good practice it is proposed that the Centre for Visioning Sustainable Societies (CViSS) be established as a cross School centre to bring together staff with related interests.
The establishment of CViSS will enable staff from different parts of the School to come together, network and develop collaborative projects. The Centre will act as a catalyst for the development of cross school research activity, generating journal articles, conference papers and applications for research funding and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships relating to the areas of sustainable development, global citizenship and ethics.
The Centre will assist in the School's response to the Welsh Assembly Government and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales's agenda for integrating issues of sustainable development and global citizenship into the undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. This will be achieved through organising peer training sessions, advising on module development and through co-ordinating the integration of staff research relating to sustainable development into module delivery.
Recent activity has included:
- 3 Extended Research Leave awards relating to sustainability research
- Several bids have been made to funding sources relating to sustainability (e.g. Wales for Africa)
- Developing a KTP with the National Botanic Gardens relating to sustainable visitor management.
- A number of staff have published journal articles and book chapters, and presented conference papers on themes relating to sustainability.
