The modern role of engineers has evolved in recent years. Nowadays, the problems that they have to deal with have become multidisciplinary. There is a growing need to address not only the technical aspects related to power engineering but also other areas, such as environmental and economical issues have to be considered.
The program of “Sustainable Fuels Economy” gives students the knowledge, as well as practical skills to solve the problems of energy production and management at different levels, from a company or municipality level to the global scale.
The subjects offered are related to:
• physics and chemistry of energy processes,
• fuel and energy technologies,
• quantitative analysis of energy – economy – environment relations,
• innovation, entrepreneurship and business creation.
This broad and diversified program not only aims at giving students the knowledge and skills in pure technical fields, but also at preparing them to solve complex problems that encompass technological, economic and environmental aspects of energy production, transformation and consumption. Subjects of introduction to systems modeling, integrated modeling and fuels and energy systems modeling give knowledge and ability to apply models which form the base method of systems analysis.
The program is presumably unique, neither technical nor economic universities offer such programs. The education of students in such broad areas is considered as an added value of the proposed program.
Sustainable Fuels Economy is also one of the specializations offered by AGH UST within the KIC InnoEnergy and Erasmus Mundus master program called “Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems” (SELECT). Here, the very foundation is to consider the conversion chain, from primary energy source to final energy service delivered to mankind, and those environomical pathways which ensure minimal environmental impact while maintaining sustainable economy.
