ILDA was founded in 1994 by Prof. Dr. Branca Martins da Cruz in the scope of the Faculty of Law of the Lusíada University, in Porto, and, always under his direction, has been developing an important research work in environmental law. Since then, it has made an enormous effort to study, disseminate and promote environmental law in Portugal. It has also developed deep scientific and academic links with similar institutions in other countries, with a very special emphasis to Brazil.
It is a pioneer institute in Portugal, in the research, dissemination and study of Environmental Law. Vocation to the scientific and pedagogical aspects, in the construction of a solid legal building, indispensable to the effectiveness in the defense of environmental goods. It is hoped to raise in a great number of jurists, until now little sensitive to this new theme, as well as to students and graduates in other areas, the interest in the study and treatment of environmental issues, opening the way for them to deepen and professional specialization in a current problems and whose doctrinal and legislative evolution is intense.
