Introduced in 2010, HKU’s Sustainability Internships are built around the idea of the university campus as a “living laboratory” - where environmental, social and economic challenges can be studied, tested, and tackled. Working independently or in small groups, students receive guidance from staff and faculty for several weeks each term on projects that benefit the HKU campus and community. Early internship projects have focused on content development for the sustainability website, expansion of the campus recycling program, green purchasing, and advice for fellow students on low-carbon living. New projects are developed each term.

Sustainability Internships are awarded on a competitive basis, and are open to undergraduate and graduate students from any HKU Department or Faculty. Sustainability Interns must commit at least six hours per week over a period of three to four months (the exact duration of the internships varies by project).
