In 1991, the University of Monastir took upon the name of the University of the Centre. However, as it grew to include nearly 60,000 students across 30 institutions, it was split into multiple universities in 2004, of which one is the University of Sousse. Today, the University of Sousse numbers over 2,300 professors and over 28,000 students across 17 institutions.
